NICARAGUA PHOTO TOUR
Culture and Street Photography Tour 2027
This Nicaragua photography tour runs from the colonial cities of the Pacific side to the cigar and coffee country of the northern highlands.
We start in Granada, with its painted streets, its yellow cathedral, and a sunset boat ride through Las Isletas on Lake Nicaragua. On the way to León we stop in the Pueblos Blancos, small towns known for their potters, their furniture makers and, in Diriomo, their witches. León gives us a white cathedral roof to walk across, a busy central market and walls covered in murals. After two nights on the beach at Las Peñitas, we head north into the hills: cigar rollers and tobacco farms in Estelí, then coffee, cacao and a women's weaving collective around Matagalpa. We finish near Masaya, close to the volcano and the artisan market.
Join our Nicaragua photo tour: fourteen days, six towns, and plenty of time with the people who live and work there.

Why join a photo tour to Nicaragua?
Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, and very few photography tours go there. That leaves plenty of room for unique photography, well off the tourist trail. Its colonial cities are painted in strong colors, daily life happens out on the street and in the markets, and much of what the country is known for is still made by hand: pottery, rocking chairs, hammocks, cigars, chocolate, and woven cloth.
The country changes quickly as you travel north. Around Granada and León the Pacific lowlands are hot and flat, with a line of volcanoes on the horizon. A few hours away, the hills around Estelí and Matagalpa are green and cooler, and this is where Nicaragua's cigars and much of its coffee are grown.
Late November and early December are a good time to be there. The rains have mostly ended on the Pacific side, the coffee harvest is getting underway in the highlands, and sea turtle hatchlings are still making their way to the ocean on the coast near León.
Our tour
This Nicaragua photography tour is built for photographers who want time with people, crafts, and everyday life, at a pace that leaves room to go back to a street or a market when the light is better.
Our 14-day journey starts and ends in Managua and moves through Granada, Los Pueblos Blancos, León, Las Peñitas, Estelí and Matagalpa. We stay two or three nights in each of the main towns, so there's no need to pack up every morning.
Much of what we photograph comes through people we know. Darlene has visited Nicaragua many times and has led photo tours here before, and her connection with Empowerment International in Granada goes back more than a decade. The afternoon we spend photographing the neighborhood with the young photographers of its photography club has been a favorite with her past groups. We also share lunch with a family on their coffee farm, visit a cacao farm, a women's weaving collective and a cigar factory, and spend a day with the potters and woodworkers of the Pueblos Blancos.
We travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with a local driver throughout. With a maximum of 12 participants and two tour leaders, there's always someone close by to help with a setting or a composition. Daniel is fluent in Spanish, and Darlene speaks some Spanish too, which makes a real difference when you want to stop and talk with someone before taking their portrait.
The itinerary below is our plan, and we follow it closely. Some of the best moments on this tour depend on nature and on local life: a turtle nest hatching, a festival in the square, a family inviting us in for coffee. When something like that comes along, we make room for it.
We also plan our days around the light. Mornings start early, the middle of the day is for lunch and a rest while it's hottest, and we're back out in the late afternoon and evening when the light softens.
Our itinerary, and staying flexible
Day 1 | Arrival in Managua, Airport code (MGA) | November 30, 2027
We meet you at Managua's international airport and drive to Granada, about an hour away. Most flights from the United States land in the afternoon or evening, so today is simply about arriving, checking in and settling into this colonial city on the shore of Lake Nicaragua.
Accommodation: Hotel Con Corazón, or similar, Granada, 3 nights.
Day 2 | Granada | (B, L, D)
We start the morning with a walking tour of Granada: Parque Central and the cathedral, the Iglesia San Francisco and the busy market street. We climb a church bell tower for the view across the red-tiled rooftops to the lake. After lunch and a rest, we head out on Lake Nicaragua by boat to Las Isletas, a scatter of 365 small islands just off the shore. We stop at the island where the monkeys live and finish at an island bar to photograph the sunset over the water.
Accommodation: Hotel Con Corazón, or similar, Granada.
Day 3 | Granada | (B, L, D)
The morning is free to revisit a corner of town you liked, or to take a horse-drawn carriage around the colonial streets (optional, not included). After lunch we visit Empowerment International and go out on a photo walk with the students of its photography club through their own neighborhood. This is where local families live and work, away from the tourist center. They know every corner of their barrio, they take great pictures, and sharing the afternoon with them is one of the highlights of this tour.
Accommodation: Hotel Con Corazón, or similar, Granada.
Day 4 | Granada to León through the Pueblos Blancos | (B, L, D)
Today is a full day on the road, with plenty of reasons to stop. We visit La Granadilla, a farming community, to photograph its fruit farms, then continue into the Pueblos Blancos. In San Juan de Oriente, potters shape and paint the local clay by hand. Diriomo is known as the town of witches, for its folk healers and old legends, and for traditional sweets and chicha bruja, a homemade corn drink. In Masatepe, woodworkers build the cane-woven rocking chairs Nicaragua is known for. We stop for lunch in Catarina, overlooking the crater lake of Laguna de Apoyo, and reach León in time for dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel El Convento, or similar, León, 2 nights.
Day 5 | León | (B, L)
We go out early, before the heat, for a walking tour of León. The white Cathedral of León, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lets visitors out onto its roof, a field of white domes with views to the volcanoes. We walk through the Mercado Central, then visit the Museo de la Revolución, where a guide, often a veteran of the war, tells the story of modern Nicaragua. In the afternoon, we tour the Flor de Caña rum distillery, with sugarcane fields nearby. The evening is free, and the tour leaders can offer restaurant suggestions. You might visit the Rubén Darío museum, the Myths and Legends museum or the city's art gallery (optional, not included).
Accommodation: Hotel El Convento, or similar, León.
Day 6 | León to Las Peñitas | (B, L, D)
A short drive takes us to the Pacific coast at Las Peñitas, a small beach town beside the Isla Juan Venado reserve. We take a boat into the mangroves of the reserve, and, nature permitting, join a local sea turtle conservation project to release hatchlings into the ocean. We spend the evening on the beach, with sunset over the Pacific and, on a clear night, the stars.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Las Peñitas, 2 nights.
Day 7 | Las Peñitas | (B, L, D)
A slower day by the sea. If the fishing boats are working, dawn is the time to see them come in with the catch. The rest of the day is yours: walk the beach, join an image review with Darlene or Daniel, or book a kayak, boat or fishing trip (optional, not included). In the evening, if conditions allow, we try some night photography on the beach, possibly with fire spinning.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Las Peñitas.
Day 8 | Las Peñitas to Estelí | (B, L, D)
After breakfast we head inland and north into the highlands, about three hours on the road. The air gets cooler as we climb. We arrive in Estelí in the afternoon, settle in, and take a first walk around town before dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Estelí, 2 nights.
Day 9 | Estelí | (B, L, D)
Estelí is the center of Nicaragua's cigar industry. We spend the day at a cigar factory, watching tobacco leaves being sorted and aged and cigars being rolled by hand, and visit a tobacco farm and its curing barns. The rolling rooms, the stacked bales and the hands at work make for strong environmental portraits.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Estelí.
Day 10 | Estelí to Matagalpa | (B, L, D)
A short drive through the hills brings us to Matagalpa, in the heart of Nicaragua's coffee country. We settle in and head out in the late afternoon to photograph the sunset over the valley.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Matagalpa, 3 nights.
Day 11 | Matagalpa | (B, L, D)
We spend the day on a family coffee farm. We share lunch in their home, then walk the plantation with them and follow the beans from the plants to the processing. With the harvest underway, there's a good chance of photographing ripe red cherries and the people picking them.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Matagalpa.
Day 12 | Matagalpa | (B, L, D)
This morning we visit a cacao farm to see how cacao is grown and turned into chocolate. In the afternoon we spend time with a women's weaving collective, photographing the looms, the threads and the women who work them.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, Matagalpa.
Day 13 | Matagalpa to Masaya | (B, L, D)
We drive south toward Masaya and stop at the artisan market for lunch and a last chance to shop for hammocks, ceramics and crafts to take home. Our hotel for the final night looks out over the volcano and the lake. We finish with a farewell dinner together.
Accommodation: Hotel to be confirmed, near Masaya, 1 night.

Dietary needs can be accommodated. Let us know at the time of booking and we will confirm arrangements in advance.

Nicaragua uses 120V at 60Hz with the same flat-pin plugs as the United States and Canada (Type A and B), so travelers from North America will not need an adapter or converter.
